Seminar on "A Brief Study on Small-scale Fixed Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)" by Dr. Cai Guowei, Research Scientist, Temasek Laboratories, National University of Singapore

8th Floor (Meeting Room 8A), Temasek Laboratories, 5A Engineering Drive 1, National University of Singapore

Abstract: Small-scale fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a hot topic in the last three to four decades. They have been served as reliable and efficient platforms, and assisted people to accomplish various military and civil-based missions. Due to the ultra-low cost, great agility, and easy maintenance, small-scale fixed wing UAVs are also arousing great interest in the academic circle and many experimental-purpose fixed wings, UAVs have been developed by the researchers in universities and enterprises. In this study, we will have a quite brief overview on the current development status of small-scale fixed wing UAVs. The chronological history, technological overview, and representative implementations will be introduced also in this study. The platform selection for our MAS project will be briefly discussed at the end of this study.

Speaker: Guowei Cai was born in Tianjin, China, on June 14, 1980. He received the B.E. degree in the Department Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Tianjin University in 2002 and Ph.D. degree in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2008 respectively.

From 2002 to 2003, he was a Product Engineer with Motorola Electronic Company Ltd., Tianjin. In 2008, he was a Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, NUS. Since Oct 2009, he works as a Research Scientist in Temasek Laboratories at NUS. His current research interests include system modeling and identification, control applications, and the development of unmanned-aerial-vehicle helicopter systems.
